Vics enjoyed a successful workout against Sammy McIlroy’s Morecambe on Saturday morning, with Andy Preece’s men claiming a well-earned draw against the NPower League Two outfit who finished fourth last term.

The behind closed doors friendly at Lancaster University was only arranged on Friday, but it gave Preece an opportunity to test the trialists once more ahead of tomorrow night’s (Tuesday) match at home to Stockport County.
Morecambe fielded a strong lineup, with half a dozen first team regulars from the team that performed above expectations to earn a playoff place last season.
However, Vics’ new look side held their own for much of the game, before Stewart Drummond broke the deadlock for The Shrimps when he converted Craig Stanley’s corner.
But forward Haydn Paul, unlucky to see his fierce low shot cannon off the upright in the first half against Falkirk last week, netted an equaliser with a well placed header.
Speaking to Morecambe’s Official Website, McIlroy said it was an excellent workout for his side and thanked Preece for agreeing to the fixture.
“It was a good run out for everyone. It was more about fitness than the result and everyone came through well,” said McIlroy, who made eight appearances for Vics from 1991-93 and started his managerial career with a brief stint at the Drill Field in 1992-93.
The 55-year-old former Northern Ireland forward went on to praise the performance of Preece’s squad.
“Northwich were young and eager and had a real go at us, which was good because it was a really competitive hour and was a good warm-up for our game at Barrow on Tuesday.''
29-year-old striker George Clegg, the former Manchester United youngster most recently on the books of Blue Square North side Hinckley United, featured up front for Vics and may play some part against County tomorrow.
