Vics missed out on the chance to climb to sixth in the Blue Square North standings, after a late equaliser from substitute Gavin Strachan denied Andy Preece's men a vital three points at the Victoria Stadium.
Preece will be certainly be the unhappiest of the two managers, after Vics wasted a plentiful supply of opportunities to have won the game.
Wayne Riley opened the scoring for Vics after just nine minutes following a bright start, looping a header over Corby goalkeeper Mark Osborn.
Riley had earlier almost played in Mark Danks, following an Ian Herring long throw.
At the other end wideman Jamie McGhee twisted and turned following a quick counter attack, before seeing his shot blocked on the edge of the area.
He then followed up with a challenge in an attempt to win the loose ball, but only succeeded in starting a fracas between several players, which resulted in McGhee being booked along with Mettam for their involvement. Nat Kerr was booked too having been pushed to the ground, much to the disbelief and annoyance of Preece.
Vics responded. Riley picked up possession in the centre and laid off to Danks, who played a superb lofted ball down the left flank for Connor to run onto, which was well cut out by right back Chris Hope for a throw in. Herring’s long throw saw Dutton flick on again, but Kerr couldn’t get a decisive touch in front of goal.
Danks then burst forward down the left and beat Hope, before recovering the ball having appeared to lose possession and won a corner for his efforts. From the resulting flag kick Connor completely mishit at the far post when he had looked poised to score from Kerr's flick on.
Vics were almost punished for that missed opportunity moments later, as Mettam went clean through, but the linesman flagged for offside.
Mettam then burst forward again and played in Glenn Walker, who fired across goal and missed the left upright by a matter of inches.
Brian Dutton and Jamie Vermiglio both scuffed efforts inside the area, before Jack Defty played in his striker partner Mettam with a defence splitting pass. Fortunately for Vics the linesman raised his flag for offside on 20 minutes.
Riley almost capitalised on a poor backpass from Brett Solkhon, but Osborn was off his line quickly to clear the danger.
Another Herring long throw saw Stephen Towers forced to head the ball out for a corner, before Mettam failed to connect with an attempted overhead kick at the other end.
Danks cut inside from the right before unleashing a speculative effort which Osborn had to tip over the bar.
A Hope free-kick was almost nodded in by Defty, who headed just wide of the left upright on 27 minutes, before Aspin made a timely challenge to deny Mettam who had ghosted in from the right flank.
Danks tried his luck again from range but saw his effort drop just wide of the left upright, then Dutton failed to get the ball out of his feet following a Brown corner.
Osborn then saved but knew little about it, after Danks did well on the right and played the ball across the goalmouth.
There was a big handball shout as Herring played the ball back to Aspden in the Vics penalty area. It did appear to hit his arm, but referee Wooton waved away the protests.
From a Brown corner Grand knocked the ball down on the edge of the area. Vermiglio's half volley lacked enough purchase though and trickled through to Osborn, who gathered low down just before the break.
Vermiglio burst forward after the interval and played in Aspin on the right. The right back pulled the ball across goal and it only required a touch, but it somehow eluded everyone.
Dutton then held the ball up and laid off to Connor who surged forward. He seemed to take a heavy touch but went down under the challenge of last man Liam Dolman as the ball was collected by Osborn. Dolman escaped with just a booking as Wooton awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box. Danks fired into the top of the wall from the resulting set piece.
Wooton was then involved in another moment of controversy after adjudging Danks to have been brought down on the edge of the box by Hope, although many believed the trip was inside the area and that a penalty should have been awarded.
Riley's free-kick was straight into Osborn's hands as Vics were left frustrated at being denied a golden opportunity to double the lead.
Mayo then repeated Hope's trick on Danks, bringing him down on the very edge of the area. This time Wooton adjudged that foul to be worthy of a yellow card.
Vics were then punished for failing to capitalise on our dominance, as the Steelmen's top scorer Mettam continued his run of good form with his 15th goal of the season. He turned in the box after Vics had failed to clear and fired in left footed past Aspden to draw his side level on the hour mark.
Brown's cross from the left saw Dutton head down but Connor's shot was deflected for a corner. From the resulting flag kick Kerr won a header, but Danks couldn’t turn and fire in with his back to goal.
McGhee burst down the right and blazed a cross-shot across the face of goal., which was too strong for Defty, who couldn’t get a vital touch at the far post on 63 minutes.
Mettam then went through on the left and was held up by Kerr, who made an important block from the striker’s shot on the edge of the box, before he was replaced by substitute goalkeeper come striker Ricky Millar.
Jon Newby replaced Vermiglio for Vics with 20 minutes remaining and was soon into the action, doing well down the left and beating Hope, before playing a cross that had to be put out for a throw in.
Grand's header from Herring's resulting long throw was headed out for a corner, from which Connor rose highest at the near post to power in a header to put Vics back ahead in the 76th minute. And with just 14 minutes remaining the celebrations spoke for themselves as it appeared he had won the game and a vital maximum points for Vics.
A quick counter attack saw Danks sent clear down the right, and he burst into the box and rounded Osborn, but he couldn’t cut the ball back across goal from a tight angle. Riley had been in space in the centre and would have been the better option with the goal at his mercy, if Danks had looked across.
Connor was brought down on the edge of the box on 83 minutes. Brown's curling free-kick had to be palmed out for a corner by Osborn.
But substitute Strachan came off the bench moments later, replacing Mcghee, and was on the pitch no more than 10 minutes, before he swivelled smartly in the box and tucked away an equaliser in the 87th minute.
It was Vics' punishment for not taking earlier chances, as much as it was for failing to clear the danger from Paul Mayo's long throw.
It was the story of Vics' night.
It means Farsley's results will be expunged, and as Vics have played and beaten them twice this term we will now lose six points - leaving us on 38. More news on that will follow on the Official Website later this week.
