Northwich Vics 1 - 1 Woodley Sports AET (Northwich won 5-4 on penalties)
Vics have won their first Cheshire FA Senior Cup since 1994 and their first silverware since 2006, but needed extra time and a penalty shootout to see off the challenge of Woodley Sports.
Andy Preece outlined his intentions by playing his strongest team and it was Northwich who started best. Within eight minutes Jon Newby rounded the keeper but couldn’t get his shot of, Wayne Riley followed up with a shot but the recovering goalkeeper saved.
However, it was Woodley who took the lead after 22 minutes with a terrific shot from outside the area from Danny Quilley.
The Unibond First Division One North side continued to threaten and could have done better with a header in the six yard box after 36 minutes, but it was directed straight at Vics goalkeeper Jamie Spencer.
But Vics were level at half time. With almost the last action of the first half a Riley corner was met by Danny Meadowcroft to head home and level the scores.
The second half started much like the first half with Vics pressing but creating few clear cut chances. Five minutes in, Riley got in front of his marker and rounded the goalkeeper, but he was pushed wide and could only find the side-netting.
Just two minutes later Riley’s free kick was well saved and he was to miss a third opportunity after 57 minutes following a terrific run from midfield – but his shot was an easy save for the goalkeeper.
The best chance of the second half fell to Vics after 79 minutes. Mark Danks' shot was well saved, Newby followed up on the rebound but his shot was also saved, and Jonny Allan shot from that rebound, but his effort was blocked by the covering defender.
The only remaining opportunity of normal time fell to Newby but his shot flashed wide of the top corner.
In extra time, with both teams looking tired, there were few clear chances created. Danks perhaps had the best opportunity to seal the win with five minutes remaining, but his shot was just wide.
The penalty shoot out was won 5-4 in sudden death with Vics having taken 6 penalties. Allan, Danks, Aspin, Riley and Newby all scored. Nat Kerr’s penalty was saved and Woodley hit the post to make it 4-4 after five spot kicks each.
But Spencer proved to be the hero by saving Woodley’s sixth penalty after Newby had converted in sudden death, to give the Vics the cup win.
